Len has been involved with Brass Bands since he was 11 years old, learning to play the Cornet in Bolton, Lancs. Despite having a full career in the Royal Navy, and latterly Nuclear engineering, Len maintained his playing interests throughout – even whilst serving on Submarines!
Currently playing trombone with the Championship Section Brass Band, ‘Unite the Union’ in Sheffield, Len also supports many other bands in the area, performing with of some of the best amateur brass players in Yorkshire. Not bad for a Lancashire Lad who has recently emigrated to ‘God’s own County’!
Before relocating to South Yorkshire in 2021, Len had previously been the MD at Soundhouse Brass in Plymouth and Askham Silver Band in Cumbria. In January 2022, he took over the reins at Markham when, following the challenges presented by COVID, the Band’s player numbers had reduced to single figures.
He has worked tirelessly with the support of the management Committee, to rebuild the Band back to the force that band is today and has his sights set on achieving the highest standards so the players and audiences alike enjoy our performances and further promoting the good name of the Mighty Markham Main Colliery Band.
